Egypt’s House of Representatives Adjourns Session Called by the President
Egypt’s House of Representatives, chaired by Counselor Hesham Badawy, adjourned its session on Sunday, October 18, 2026. The meeting was held at the request of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and lasted more than two hours, beginning at 1:45 p.m.
Earlier in the day, President El-Sisi chaired a meeting of the National Defense Council at the Presidential Palace in Cairo, attended by senior state officials, military commanders and relevant ministers.
According to Presidential Spokesperson Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy, the council reviewed regional developments and the escalating tensions affecting the region, particularly the attacks targeting Saudi Arabia.
The council reaffirmed Egypt’s full solidarity with Saudi Arabia, emphasizing the historic ties between the two countries and the connection between Saudi, Egyptian and broader Arab national security.
It also stressed Egypt’s commitment to providing the necessary support to protect Saudi Arabia’s security, stability and territorial integrity, while intensifying diplomatic and political efforts with regional and international partners to reduce tensions and pursue peaceful solutions to regional crises.
Egypt’s Constitution and the internal regulations of the House of Representatives establish procedures for declaring war or deploying the armed forces on combat missions outside the country.
Article 152 of the Constitution requires the president to seek the opinion of the National Defense Council and obtain approval from two-thirds of the members of the House of Representatives before taking such action.
Article 130 of the House’s internal regulations further stipulates that the approval must be granted during an urgent closed session convened at the president’s request following consultation with the National Defense Council
